Was at home last night, threw something across the room, after the object was thrown my handf carried on moving and hit my thumb onto the back of the sofa, which is a hard object. At first it hurt badly and i couldnt use it at all, but still had the feeling in it so dont think it is broken. I put some icecubes in a blue Jay cloth and pressed that onto it for a while which helped a little. This morning it is very swollen and very painful and I cant move it without causing more pain. Is it worth bothering a doctor about? Would they be able to do anything? I've only been to one twice before so forgive me for the silly question. I don't want to waste their time.

It sounds as if you have a cyst. In itself, it's just a bubble of liquid and not a major problem unless it is in an area where it will be irritated or will press against nerves and cause pain. Pretty much the conditions you have in the hand and wrist. When the doctor was talking surgery, he wasn't likely talking the whole anesthesia, you asleep and out of it kind. More than likely he meant a local surgery, done with a local anesthetic, so you won't feel anything in your wrist and hand. Most cysts can be removed in less than 30 minutes, and will take a morning or afternoon out of your day. You get a few stitches to close up the incision, you leave your little bubble behind, and the pain is all gone in a day or so. Afterwards, you use your wrist and hand without pain and no more worries. Really, it may just be a small bubble, but currently it is causing you big discomfort. So why fear the surgery? Because that is what this is really about, fear. The cure for your problem is to schedule a minor surgery and have it removed. Then it's gone, and will likely stay gone. And afterwards, you will wonder what the big deal was, and why you put it off.

You may have sprained your thumb or possibly chipped a small bone. The latter seems unlikely if you still have normal movement within the thumb.

It is not a silly question and if the pain persists, you can either wait until Monday to see your own Doc or go to your nearest A&E and have it checked out.

By the way, if your going to the A&E do it now because Saturday night is drunks night at your local A&E and you do not want to be there then.

You are not being silly at all thats what your gp is there for.But it may be worth your while to go to your nearest A/E dept as this is probably where your gp will send you for a x-ray just to be make sure theres no fracture. So pop alony to A/E in stead and see one off the drs there.Yes you may not off got a fracture ,but you may have sprain your thumb or havea torn ligament. With out not going you wont know .In the mean time keep applying the cold compress, keep the arm elevated high, rest that hand if you can.Good Luck

I'd go you may still have broken it.

I had my finger bent back by a ball rebounding off it over 10 years ago, I was told it was probably only bruised by both the teacher and by A + E but they did an x-ray and found that I had actually chipped the bone!

I had it all strapped up for weeks and couldn't use it properly for months, and even now it can end up sore if I do some things for too long.

Wow, I'd never go to a doctor for something like this. You smacked it hard so now it hurts and is swollen, nothing too unexpected there, If you had broken it you would know. I'd just give it a couple of days and if for some reason it doesn't get better or gets worse then go see a doctor.

If you can move your thumb with some pain it is probably just sprained or bruised. It would be difficult to move a finger that was broken. Suggest you ice it for a few days and if it does not get better then go to the doctors.

Silly s*d - temper, temper. Probably broken the bone in your thumb. Yes you need to see doctor, in fact better that instead of making appointment with Doctor - better you go straight to A & E hospital - you will, at very least need an X-ray to determine extent of damage and how they will 'fix' it for you

Good luck - teach you not to throw a temper tantrum anymore and not hurl things across the room.

I would get a dr's opinion. Yes, it could be a bad spring, but it could be a hairline fracture.
Better safe than sorry.
By the way, I hope you nailed the person with whatever you threw, considering the price you are paying in pain!

Don't know why you think your question is silly. The question of that fellow who wanted to find out if he would get electrocuted if he sticks his tongue into an electrical outlet is the SILLY one. Where was he when God passed out neurons? Anyway, see the doctor-you may have broken your bone. Get proper treatment before it's too late.

It is possible but unlikely that you broke your thumb. Although the fact that it was not numb does not mean it is not broken. Give it a few days - call in to a pharmacist for advice first. Ok? Hope that helps.
In future... count to ten before you throw!
