I do not agree that they are practically the same. I do, however, agree that they are very similar. I speak English, French, Spanish and Italian. Except for English all are similar enough, where if you learn one and can speak it well, the others are very easy to learn. I learned Spanish because my mom always had Spanish speaking house keepers when we were growing up. I worked at an Italian restaurant, and learned to speak Italian without ever even making an effort (owner spoke fluent Italian). After that, French seemed like a natural step, so I bought some tapes and learned it as well. I can not read or write in these languages however. Perhaps that makes them more similar (I wouldn't know), so you may be correct.

I totally agree. I'm only in French 3 right now (which means I can speak French pretty well but not fluently), but I have a lot of friends in Spanish and when I spoke French to my other friends they asked me "You speak Spanish? I thought you took French".
They have a lot of similar words and conjugations for verbs.

I wish I can speak them both fluently.
I'm still learning them now and German. I know the basics already. English is no problem with me, ironically I'm better at it than my mother language. I'm asian.
TO Pondlife: LOL they are all English based language. There's not much difference. Anyway, I love the Australian strine. No doubt it's an ace!

I used to get my French and Spanish mixed up... teachers would get really mad which only made me do it even more on purpose.

Yes, I think it's because of the pronunciation... I find Afrikaans and Dutch to be quite similar as well.
