Total Eclipse (1995)
A sensationalized retelling of the Rimbaud-Verlaine story. The great French poet Arthur Rimbaud (Leonardo DiCaprio) wrote all his poems, which continue to amaze and inspire to this day, during a brief burst of activity in the early 1870s, when he was just a teenager. According to Christopher Hampton's screenplay, it's amazing Rimbaud found time to write anything at all, since he was carrying on a torrid, absinthe-soaked homosexual love affair with the older and not quite so great poet Paul Verlaine (David Thewlis). This affair ended when Verlaine shot Rimbaud in the hand in a Brussels hotel room.
This movie has some fairly graphic sex scenes between Leonardo DiCaprio and David Thewlis.

Lost and Delirious, Show Me Love, Sunday Bloody Sunday, and Personal Best are among my favorites. L and D is from just a couple years ago about girls in a boarding school, Show Me Love is from Sweden and is very, very good about two young adolescent girls, Sunday Bloody Sunday is about a love triangle among a set of adults, that movie is about 30 years old and was directed by the guy who did Midnight Cowboy with Dustin Hoffman just before Sunday, and Personal Best has a great performance from 1982 by Mariel Hemingway about two athletes.

The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert - two drag queens and a transsexual on a road trip to a cabaret gig (Haven't seen it yet)
Fire (1996) - a movie about two married women who turn to each other and away from their traditional roles (Caused riots when it came out in India; very good movie)
To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar - a comedy about drag queens featuring two of the ugliest drag queens in history (loosely based on Priscilla)

If you count movies with strong gay characters and actors who were gay, your list would take, many, many pages. There are so many, many. Watch a classic movie, even before they could come out with completely gay characters there where so many gay characters that just didn't come out and say it. Watch Spartacus, Tony Curtis runs away so he won't get raped by his owner for crying out loud. Ben Hur, the whole freakin story was about love and the fall out of love between the two men. So many gays in movies... How about name me a movie that didn't have gay person in it.

Now... to respond to your question, "MAURICE" is a terrific action picture. I wasn't all that loopy approximately BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN. besides the fact that the e book (particularly, a quick tale) is rather great. HOOPLA! Rock E. Horror
