useful substances enter and waste products exit of course.

waste products would be carbon dioxide, urea, etc.

the cell membrane is basically a lipid bilayer with a hydrophilic head and a hydrophobic tail. this is what regulates the flow of substances in and out of the cell. unless of course some sort of active diffusion that takes place to assist certain substances/molecules in and out of the cell.

generally, nutrients and other 'stuff' that the cell needs from the outside environment enters the cell and then waste exits it.

you should probably read up on this if you need to know more. just type cell membrane on the search bar and you'll get tons of info about it!
