Bedsheets are the thin, light cloths we put between mattress and blankets; a bedspread is a cover that goes over your blankets to either (a) make the bed pretty or (b) keep the dust and other weird things from falling onto your bed.

In general, you don't need a bedspread unless you like the bedding catalog look for your bed. Sheets? I recommend both top and bottom sheets and pillowcases (ditch the shams -- you can wake up with a pillow hat sometimes) because it keeps general body stuff from your blankets, allowing them to go a little longer between washes.

It like how jeans can get 2 (or more if you're a man) wears if they're not stained vs. underwear getting one (even if they "seem" clean).

Okay, here's what I think--

use a bottom sheet (I prefer fitted!) to protect yourself from the matress and the matress from you and whoever else is in the bed

the top sheet is there because some folks can;t sleep comfortably unless they have something between themselves and the air. Some people, no matter how hot it is, want to cover their midsection when they sleep. This sheet also makes it more comfortable to have either

a bedspread or blanket(s) on top--
we have top sheet, spread, then layers of blankets, because it's never eally *that* cold where we live and we don;t want ot be stuck with blankets all up in there.
If it's really cold somewhere, though, and if you know you'll need the extra warmth, sometimes people put the blanket on top of the top sheet, then the bedspread on top of that...

There's always room for more on top, as far as blanket, quilts, comfortors, etc. go

Also, the sheets protect the heavier bedding, like spreads and blankets, from needing to be washed as often. Since sheets are lightweight and not too expensive, it's easier to have more than one set and launder it more often than it would be to wash blankets and bedspreads on a regular basis.

Okay, if you want to really protect your mattress and bed spread this is what you need.

A mattress pad...it catches most of the dust and skin cells that bed bugs dine on...it can be taken off and washed as often as you want to.

A fitted sheet...the material is softer than the pad and is more comfortable to sleep on.

A flat sheet...it protects the bed spread or comforter from soil and body oils to help it last longer.

A soft blanket to help keep warm when a bed spread is too much but a sheet is not enough.

A comforter or bed spread for winter months to keep you warm at night.

Also, sheets are less expensive than buying new comforters, so protect the more expensive things!

The main reason that Bed sheets are used is to save wear and tear on the blankets or rest of the bedding. Blankets soil less when protected by the bed sheets.....and it is easier to wash and dry sheets than blankets.

Because sheets are so thin- the blanket is what is cozy and warm! The purpose of the top sheet is to keep the bedspread clean though since it is such a pain to wash.

a bed spread is just for looks though it makes the bed warmer than just a sheet.

1) So you don't have to wash the blanket as often.

2) So the toenails on your big toes won't put holes in the blanket while you toss and turn in your sleep.
