Plus whats the amount of power difference that one can get out of by installing a roller cam in Chevy 350cu/in?
And is the TH400 better than a TH350 or should I go for a 700R-4 with it?

go with the turbo hydramatic 400.its a lot better then the 350 plus a 400 has more clutches and a roller cam,you dont get the slop in valve movement, and it makes more presise valve opening.

Since you're mentioning automatics, I'll assume your engine has a crank for an AT rather than a manual, and that the TA originally had an automatic. The TH 400 is stronger than the TH 350, but it becomes starved for fluid in hard cornering, a problem the 350 doesn't suffer from. The 400 is also heavier than the 350, and most have a longer tail shaft, so if the TA had a TH350, you'll need a short tail 400 to match up without having to modify the drive shaft. These were more common in the B.O.P. cars than in Chevys. The 700R-4 is a good unit, but early models (pre 90) had no positive lock out for the overdrive. This can be fixed with a simple on-off toggle switch to shut the overdrive off. Another fix you will have to make is overriding the lockout torque converter on the 700R-4. Great for gas mileage, lousy for performance. I've built both the TH 350 and TH 400 for racing, and either one will hold up to daily driving and quarter mile blasts as long as you keep the fluid changed. If you're going to be doing any type of road racing and throwing the car into hard curves, go with the TH 350.

I do not know what year your trans am is, but definately find a 6 speed tranny out of a wrecked 94 on up camaro/trans am. The performance and especially gas mileage will blow you away. They are very common at between $500-$750 at salvage yards. I mean can you imagine break neck acceleration with 33mpg highway too??? I had one, I truely miss mine. Jeremy

i would suggest for an auto a TH400 or a 700r4 intecepter out of an old caprice cop car,the valve body is upgraded for faster accelleration, stock 700's need some massaging L.O.L your best bet would be a 5 speed manual from a early 80's sting-ray,two stage clutch wooee that would be fun!
