Thank you for asking the most important question of our life!!
Obviously, there are numerous answers but somehow, no prescription seems to work with everyone. As the next best option, let me share with you what I find as the right method for myself.
We need to remove all negative feelings from our mind in order to live happily. The root cause for all negative feelings is an excessive self orientation. Self in this context is the broader one that we normally deal with, which also includes those who are near and dear to us because they are so close to our 'self' ......as though like an attachment or extension.
It is not possible, in my opinion, to completely eliminate all negative feelings from within us. However, if we make conscious effort, it is possible to reduce their frequency of occurrence as well as intensity and impact. As we keep regularly reminding ourselves that we need not think too high of us since we are so small compared to this vast and varied universe, our self orientation gets considerably reduced and therefore negative feelings that disturb our happy state of mind also become few and far between.... resulting in maximising our happy living!!
Hope you would find some sense in this approach!

The answer to "how does one live happily" depends on two things.
One is accepting selfishness--you decide, you act self responsibly, you have liberty and you make such good use of it that the results make you happy--something only one mind can decide and that one man who can decide and do the steps is YOU.
The second is what is the universe you live in? What you do has to work in reality--so, if you live in real space-time, what should make you happy is what works that you can make happen.
So, the key is: knowing how to make things happen. Which means being honest with yourself about what you KNOW as a science and what you only "sort of know something about"; and then using your knowledge of how something works, successfully, to make valuable things happen.
Sure, they'll be available for you then to control, use up, utilize, invest in others, whatever. But the point is your happiness will come from being honest with yourself, from being a result-getting confident human self, and from your interacting with other people who think as you do.
Omit any one of these steps--and you'll be amazed how fast happiness goes out of your life.

to live happily one needs to be unconditional and respect everyone irrespective of color and race, age and gender. this will leave to worldly happiness.
true happiness as Kind David says comes from Him, the Creator alone. "In His presence there is fullness joy and at Thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore".

Like most things in life, happiness is a choice we make. No matter what you are going through, you can choose to moan and gripe about it (making yourself and everyone around you miserable)....or you can choose to accept the fact that it is what it is, and make the best of it. It isn't always easy to do....but it is how I have made it through some very rough times in my life.

to accept your life the way it is. to accept others and treat others with respect and kindness. to not take anything for granted and help others who don't/won't have what you have. to learn and grow from your mistakes. to accept who you are to yourself. to enjoy your life and make the most of it. that's happiness.
