Its not fair to compare Chanel and Versace... really!
French and Italian, to start with!!!
On one hand... Chanel is elegant, classy, lots of tweed suits..... its for the elite women around the world.
Chanel has more sultry and seductive definition to “sexy"!!
Almost all their skirts are at knee-length (kinda conservative... right?)
They design with lots of gold buttons and pearls
Versace on the other hand is luxurious! It also branches into different lines; Gianni Versace Couture, Versus, Versace Jeans Couture, Versace Ceramic Designs, Versace Collection, Versace Sport.... did I miss any?!?
It goes further to home furnishings!
Versace is trendy and always changing (Unlike the classical designs that screams CHANEL)
Versace is hot and sexy!! Its colorful.... sometimes daring!
So, you cant say which one is better you know.... its us and our mood or style that can pick one or both.... depending on the time and place... oh and did I say the mood too? ;-)

For what exactly? Are you speaking in general terms? If so, they are both well respected in the fashion industry, but very different in styles. It would be a personal preference I suppose. But if your asking about....say....everyday wear, I would have to go with Chanel.
Personally I like Missoni better than either of them.
