in 2006, the monarchy seems to be odd with the times. it is useless and isn't necessary for it to be around. once the Queen dies, i'm sure it will atrophy and all will be simpler.

The monarchy matters deeply to older Brit folks I've noticed who have lived their lives without questioning the pig-like lifestyle of those genetically linked to the royal family. A larger growing segment of the population are growing tired of reading the bratty behaviour of royals in gossip sections.

The royalty is just a figurehead, a ceremonial relic. I think Spain's monarchy wields just a bit more power than the British one, but the parliamentary process there has also largely rendered the royal role as vestigial.

They are the same as any other politicians; with the same amount of power, really. What would be simpler? Someone like President Bush?
