I don't mean why are they popular, because duh, I mean why does my wife keep talking about buying one for her family, but can't decide how to do it, whether to send them the money or buy some sort of phone here and send it to them, and will it work there, does it have a sim card, how much to connect, blah, blah, blah. Can someone explain to me how it all works between the US and PH and cell phones?

Phones that are identified as tri-band or quad-band will work in the Philippines. These are identified as "international" phones. The US network is different than the one in the Philippines.

It is typical for them to want the best phone they can get you both to buy (ha ha), so find out the name and brand and see how much you can get it for on ebay.

You'll hear talk of SIM cards and "unlocking" but if it is identified as international, you'll be fine. Most carriers in the US will charge you an arm and a leg for one of their phones without a contract, so go for ebay.

It's been my experience that prices for phones are cheaper on ebay than in the Philippines. You must also consider the cost of shipping and chances of it being stolen.

Good luck.

Ask them if they already have an existing phone and what is it for. Some people just wants the latest phone in the market and show it off to friends and neighbors. I get annoyed people comparing their phones, do they really need all those extra features?

Anyway sending money is best, some phones in the US does not work in the Philippines. At the current exchange rate of 1 US Dollar to 47 Pesos (bank exchange rate), basic phones cost around 150 US Dollars, mid range phones cost around 300 US Dollars maximum. Sending more, means you are too generous.

cellphones in the philippines are popular because it is. unlyk in d states, cellphones here are lyk much more advnced and stuff lyk dat. there's a better selection of cellphones when it comes to buying one in th phil. and if you are gonna buy one there, make sure you have the line open already because it is xpensive to have the fone line open in the phil lyk around P1000 if its a samsung model and isnt yet avail (sumthng lyk that) you have to buy a sim card which is only about P150 or $2 there's a wide range of prices for the cellphones ranging from P5000 to P15000 ($100-$300) for the ordinary ones and about P15000-23000 (300-500) for the really excellent ones, usually just for showing off.. there are various softwares or programs you can download on the internet for texting cellphones from the computer for free (lyk chikka) and skype(for us and canada). you can also play games on it, take pictures, access the gprs, stuff lyk that. and also make sure that if you are gonna buy there, you have to buy a fone that is dualband or triband or quadband etc.. so people in other countries will be able to use it too.. so and so.. ;D

the top 3 cellphone companies are smart , globe, and sun. The later offering call and talk unlimited for sun to sun only for a postpaid plan . But the talk unlimited works only if you are here in the philippines.

people here in our country loves to get in touch with friends, very sociable and caring towards our friends and especially to our family... so for me it is more of a necessity than a show off thing....

sim cards are easily available and by the way... dont worry, people here know how to get a good deal by themselves if you finally decided to just send them the money...

In Philippines, everyone is obsessed with cell phones--especially text messeges. I think you should buy a phone here and then send it to them. It's a lot cheaper i think. Almost everyone has a cell phone there. In some areas, cell phones can cost up to 300 U.S. dollars.

It will be better if you just send them the money and let them buy their cellphone in the Philippines. So no hassles and they can choose the phone they want. $200-$300 will buy a decent phone. But if you want to buy a phone to send them, make sure it's Nokia.

better to send them the money so they'll be the one to choose the units they like.. aside from its a necessity, its the cheapest way to connect to ur family and friends, coz most of them will just send text msgs to keep in touch..
