Operation Torch was the landing of American troops in French occupied Morocco, the aim being to crush the German Afrika Korps between them to the west & the British 8th Army to the east.

After the Germans were thrown out from North Africa, The Allies landed in Siciliy (on the west coast) & raced to capture Palermo & Syracuse but failed to stop German retreat into Italy.

Thereupon in 1943, the Aliies landed in south-eastern Italy & moved painfully up the peninsula & was held at Monte Cassino. To break the deadlock, the Americans landed a force at Anzio, which failed to break the deadlock.

When the Italians capitulated, Hitler sent his troops to take over the defence of Italy & rescued Mussolini who was arrested by the Italians & imprisoned on Gran Sasso.

Meanwhile, disinformation was "leaked" to fool the Germans into thinking that the Allied would sent an invasion force to land on the southern coast of France when the invasion took place in Normandy on June 6, 1944.

In the Dec of 1944, the Germans launched a counter-offensive through the Ardennes, the main aim being to cut the British from the Americans & deprive the Allies of the use Antwerp, a vital supply port. This created a bulge in the front lines (hence the Battle of the Bulge). This counter-offensive was blunted & eventually defeated by Patton's northward attack.

The other major operation that took place was Operation Market Garden, an attempt by the Allies to capture bridges over the Rhine using paratroopers by failed due to disregard for accurate intelligence & lack of proper planning.

The wastage of manpower & material by the Germans in the counter-offensive meant that young boys & old men were drafted into VolkSturmm units who put up little & ineffectual resistance.
