If they actually served the public then you could call them public servants.
But they usually serve themselves.

They are not on welfare. Think of them as well paid government workers. Their job is usually to enact new legislation, or to administer the government, or enforce the laws. It really depends on the political office they hold.

No, they actually have experience, education, and expertise in their fields. A lot of people rag on them, but I know that a common person would not be able to do a better job.
