No, coffee didn't come to Europe until after the Ottomans were repulsed from Vienna in the 17th century.
The mainstay vice, as always, was alcohol.
In those days, religion truly was the 'opiate of the masses.'
Christianity had a slant toward the masochistic, that included self-administered whippings, hair shirts, chastity belts, bare-footed pilgrimages to far-off places etc.
