I think it would depend on the attitude of the individual. Factors that would play an influencing part are the type of society they are raised in and the individuals background. History can still instill racist overtones in some people, that would depend on the individuals own perpective and feelings about that particular race they are learning about...I know many aboriginal people here in australia who hate white people cos of the cruelty their ancestors endured when the british arrived in 1770. History can intensify emotions and their own experiences are the cornerstone of their whole being and thinking.

I have no idea how history would make people racist, but racism is just a result of the way the parents raised the children, and the people the child grew up around. Unless, something happened to the person like say, a mexican killed the kids dad and he became racist towards all latin americans or latin people.(just an example btw) Otherwise, I seriously doubt someone could change so radically just because they learned some history.

I think it's about how you were raised. I have a friend who's dad is the most racist man I know, but my friend has looked beyond that. He doesn't have any black friends, because they wouldn't be allowed over, but he is not racist. I think our country has a racist history, but we often overlook the whites who supported blacks. Sometimes they were few and far between, but look who RAN the underground raliroad! I dont' think telling a bunch of black students about slavery will make them racist, but combine that with poor living conditions and their parent's hate, and it's a lethal combination. I hope teaching white children about slavery doesn't make them want to own someone, but if their parents hate, or their ancestors were known slaveholders, those emotions could carry through. History is full of suffering. It's also full of the overcoming of it -Helen Keller. I think racist is a general term that is not fair. Now people are using it to describe those who don't like illegal immigrants. That's not fair. When I think of racism, I think of a person who hates an ENTIRE group of people, not the few who break the law. I don't like the moms who kill their babies. Does that make me sexist? I don't like whites who form gangs, or blacks who drive by and kill a child. Hate is never an answer.

I don't think people become racist after learning history. I think people are racist from their own experiences and how they were raised. We learn well by example and experience. Even things that aren't good to learn, we still learn well by example and experience.

I think people mostly pick it up when they are children from their parents if the parents are racist.
