This Christmas we'll spend over $50 billion on gifts and more than $24 billion on gift cards alone. It's estimated that it would only take $20 billion a year to work toward ending hunger. Could we change Christmas to make it really about love and help the more than 300 million kids that live in hunger and 16,000 a day that die from hunger related causes? I think we could but I wonder how.

Here's how we can do it. About 5 years ago my husband and I decided that we were tired of giving gifts to all the members of our large family, knowing that they would just store them in the closet. That Christmas, we wrote a letter to everyone on our list and told them that beginning that year, our giving would change. We took the money we would ordinarily spend on gifts, and in their names, sent it to the Heifer Project. This wonderful project buys needy families (mostly in the third world and emerging nations) things that will sustain them on an ongoing basis. This might be a goat or a flock of hens or a water buffalo. All these animals will not only contribute to feeding their family, but will also provide a product that the family can sell for additional income. Additionally, the Heifer Project staff teach the family how to care for their animals and how to breed them insuring that the family will begin to develop an income that can lift them out of poverty. It's an easy thing to do, and a wonderful way to contribute something positive to the world.

Thanks for asking such a wonderful and compassionate question.

People are poor because their leaders are selfish. Execute or depose their leaders first, then we can talk some more.

China went from eveyrone have a bicycle in 1970 to everyone having a car in 2005.

India went from being 95% poor to being 40% poor in the same span of time.

The one thing they have in common are Leaders who AREN'T as greedy as those in Africa, South America and the Middle East.

All it takes is peaceful street and importing Sony, Nikon, Toshiba, Kodak and the people will make GOBS of money and won't need charity.

Lets stop the commercialization of Christmas first. I dont remember this time of the year being like this, it is getting crazy. The stores that i shop at didnt advertise anything for thanksgiving this year, they skipped right over to christmas.

That's a very noble cause and I totally support the idea...but realistically its unlikely that people are going to give up all of their holiday gift giving.
