Murphy's law.
The glass will slip from your hand, and spill right on your g/f's 1000.00 dollar dress right when you are about to propose to her in front of a crowd of close family and friends. Upon reaching over to clean it up, you somehow wind up pouring the rest on her head, and mess up the perfection that another $200.00 cost. And you ex-gf is hitting on you too.

it is the result of people always focusing on the negatives (possibility that something will go wrong/needless worries) to the extent that when the big event happens, something is bound to go wrong because of too much focus on the negatives.
eg., if you think you are fat, you are. if you think you are a loser, you are. if you think something bad will always happen to you, something bad will happen one day. if you think that you have no friends, you won't have any real friends.
so is my analysis good enough? :)

Its a way of saying that you shouldn't try, because it will go wrong (cause it can).
