Why is everybody making it sounds really horrible? It really isn't that bad. I was also scared the first time I had to go in, but the most I would describe it is 'a little unpleasant'.
Btw, I didn't have to stand there buck naked, in fact, I got to keep my shirt on and there was a sheet covering my lower regions. Then the gynae inserted her fingers in for the internal exam. Afterwards came the duck lips thingy, but it didn't hurt as they had the lubricants on and I barely felt the swabbing. Some people will have light bleedings afterwards, but thank God I didn't.
Maybe everyone has it differently, but trust me, if you can live through penetrative sex, then you can most definitely survive the gynae exam.
Anyway, you can tell your gynae beforehand that this is your first time and let them know if you feel uncomfortable during the procedure. I'm sure they will try to make it as painless as possible. Hope this help.

Standard check up...you undress, everything but the socks (its usually cold in there)...You lie on the table and give you a breast exam. You need to raise your arm up as they do it. They will move it for you as the maneuver. They will ask you if you are checking regularly for lumps...your probably will say anything other then no.
Then she/he will exam the lower region. You sit on the table and put your legs in the stirrups so you are sitting or laying with your legs wide open. You will be too far from the doctor so they will ask you to move up. It will be uncomfortable at first, you may need to move up more. The will feel around you abdomin and ask you if their is any pain. The will feel around the abdomin with their hands inside you as well. The will apply lubrication to do so. Then they will do a pap smear which is sort of like a throat culture for that region. You just don't gag. After that you are done. They will probably give you some papertowels or a wipe to wipe the lubrication gel up before you get dressed. The leave and you clean up and get dressed. Sometimes you bleed slightly because the tissue tears as the work their way around inside.
I like going to a woman better than a man...I don't know why. I just feel more comfortable. My doc. says I always look so uncomfortable. Oh, and they usually talk to you the whole time. I bet their is a class dedicated to this skill during med. school. If you go and find it to be so uncomfortable that you dread going back, find a different doctor. Your gyno. should be skilled at making sure you are comfortable.
Oh yeah, I forgot about the duck lips part, but everyone else got that part right...so just add that in my description.

Get completely naked, doc does a breast exam, you put your feet in the stirrups and spread 'em. Then they put the duck lips in - the speculum is an instrument that looks like long metal duck lips. This opens your vagina so they can see inside, swab the uterus, etc. Then, they put a couple fingers in and feel your ovaries.
If you're never had one before, make sure they know that. They can use smaller duck lips if it's uncomfortable. The biggest thing is to relax because tensing those muscles will make it more uncomfortable. It's no big deal, really.

it's kindof blaah but it only happens once a year.
you'll be weighed and have your blood pressure taken
you'll change into one of those hospital gowns but you'll probably have to put it on backwards (with the slit in front) and then the doctor comes in asks if you are having any problems or concerns or anything. she'll give you a breast exam. feel your ovaries. then she'll put this thing in you and open it up and swab your cervix (pap smear) and that's about it. it's very quick. good luck!!

The doctor puts you in the stirrups, takes a flashlight, spreads you open and if you've seen the movie The Cave.... yeah, it's like that.

You take your pants off and they do an exam using a little plastic thingy that creaks open, then they stick swabs in you. I love being a woman.....

I'd call the doctors office and ask to speak to his nurse. Tell her your concerns and ask her your question. She'll be more than happy to talk with you. It's much more personal that way too.
