I've heard this since the early days of home computers but have never understood the thinking behind it.
Mac computers are a closed proprietary system sold by a big corporation. Windows is made by a big corporation too but with PC's at least the hardware is an open architecture. I have my PCs built for me to my specifications at a local computer shop, or build them myself from parts. Doesn't that make PCs more like the "computer of the common man?"

Additional info: When people say this they mean it in a philosophical sense, not in terms of ease of use or quality. Like using Macs will free you from the corporate tyranny of PCs. There was a very famous commercial that depicted PC users as followers of Big Brother being saved by Apple.

When Apples first came out, IMB made computers for business and companies. Apple went for the home market, so any joe could have one.
Thus the motto

Why? Because Macs are THE most user-friendly personal computer to operate, period - you just point and click.
Macs do not need to be built that way you described since they are already equipped with the best graphics, video and sound cards available. You can always accelerate or enhance them, I guess, but nowadays they are so fast, there is little to no need.
Setting up a Mac is simple and takes only a few minutes... you just plug it in and the guide gives you all the options as you choose which options you prefer.
Macs rarely get viruses and unlike a PC, the hardware cannot become inoperable from any virus as the software and hardware are run separately, unlike the PC.
Windows usues MS DOS (the most insecure, pourous OS ever created) as its foundation and visually EMULATES Mac OS, therfore it is fundamentally flawed at its roots or foundation, thus all the continual security patches and updates as well as software, email viruses, etc.
Macs are cross-platform machines with the ability to run both Windows and Mac OS and the new Intel-inside dual processor Macs have true multi-platform/multi-operational capability. Windows can only dream of that. The Mac has always been superior in graphics, desktop publishing and video production while the PC's biggest claim to fame was selling clones and software availability/compatibility. With the new Intel chips, that makes that claim irrelevant.
Windows' hardware "open architecture" is its biggest weakness... and makes it prone to sabotage - a Mac's hardware can only be sabotaged bi opening the case and tinkering inside.
Oh... and Macs RARELY freeze or crash... maybe once a month or less if that, unlike Windows which does daily, if not hourly.
That is why.

I've never said this, but I would think it is because it doesn't take a computer expert for one to run reliably.
In other words, you don't need to know a COM port from a Serial Port from a USB port in order to... you know... compute.
I'm pretty savvy, definitely not the "common man" and my Windows computer Just Doesn't Work. Turn it on, cross your fingers. Maybe it will find the network, maybe it won't. Maybe the keyboard will work, maybe it won't.
That's why it is off 99% of the time and the keyboards on my macs are wearing out.

Because when you Boot up a Mac there is a subliminal message on the Monitor that says; "Mac the computer of the common man"! So, it in the subconscious mind.
Actually Apple was one of the first good home computers.

I think people are saying that because, Macs are 99% virus free, error free and make great home computers
i havent tried it yet, but im sure one can build a mac system out of parts.
i used to be a pc person but after all hell i'm starting to like the mac alot. although i dont like the interface cause its weird but if your a unix/linux person the mac is 100% linux just with another interface. with a mac you dont have to worry about security since its pretty much secure. i cant wait to get a mac lol, im stuck with these pc's for a while.

You know technically you can run Mac OS X on any computer that you so desire. You just have to download a hacked copy, use a live DVD or CD of Linux and then use the downloaded hack to install Mac over what ever operating system there was or on a separate drive.
Look it up on http://uneasysilence.com/os-x-proven-hacked-and-running-on-an-ordinary-pc/.
