I have DSL so the internet is fast when hook the computer up to an ethernet cord. But when the internet connects wirelessly, its so slow... any theories or suggestions why my computer is reacting like this?

It is also only 20 meters down the hall from the router.

Wireless connection can be affected by several factors, such as Speed Enemies, which can greatly interrupt your wireless signals. Examples are cellphones, some antenna equipments (Radio or TV) and even solid walls.

Try situating the router nearer to your desktop, you should also check the security settings of your router to ensure that no one is hopping on your internet connection, this definitely slows down your speed. Use MAC filtering if there is and password-protect your connection with a 128-bit WEP key. Disable broadcast of SSID to avoid it being seen by free-riders.

Hope it helps...

20 meteres is enough to slow it down. Also consider what is between that 20 meters? if there is a metal wall or something it will slow it down significantly.

Try reinstalling the Driver on your computer and make sure that the firmware is up to date on the Modem and wireless hub.

Try using the laptop next to the router and it will tell you if it is a hardware or distance problem. Also, make sure you are connected to your router. Sounds dumb, but it happens if another wireless lan is in the vicinity and your connection is set to "any".
