I've heard that taking prenatal vitamins before you are pregnant is good for future babies, as well as makes your hair and nails stronger. I'm only 18 and probably won't be getting pregnant for 10 years or so. Should I start taking them now? Is there any harm in taking them for so long, or any added benefit?

They are safe to take generally. The drawback would be that you wouldn't be getting all the niacin, vitamin A or B12 that your not pregnant body may need as they are limited in prenatals. The upside would be that you would be getting folic acid which is found in most breads now days and is key in preventing spinal bifida. I would suggest that you start taking prenatals when you start trying to get pregnant or no more than six months before you start trying to get pregnant.

There is nothing wrong with taking them now. The only differance between regular and prenatal vitamins, is that the prenatal ones have more Folic acid in them. This is WONDERFUL for your hair, skin, and nails. Taking a vitamin daily is a good idea anyway.

Dear, let me give you an elaborate answer to your question. I have absolutely different opinion on the issue from the other participant's view. The intake of vitamins, especially the long one and NOT prescribed for such periods from a physician can cause you more than harm. I have my professional opinion and own observations and state with certainty that the reckless, lenghty intake of any kind of Vitamins ( especially multi-vitamin complexes are real peril)!
If you are healthy, young lady, as I got from your question, in front of the dilemma is it good and adequate to get yourself prepared before conceiving in the long run using vitamins the answer is an emphatic no. The healthy dietary regime, with plenty of veggies and fruits and in general fresh, raw food, the balanced intake of proteins and carbohydrates and If needed courses from one to three months a year of intake of some Vitamin complex is quite enough to ensure you fertility in the future.
As to your concern about the skin, hair and nails, of course you can strenghten them with Vitamin- mineral complexes. From vital importance for them are the Vitamin A ( better taken in the form of beta-carotene), Vitamin E, Vitamin C ( all of them have also anti-aging benefits, because are anti-oxidants), mirracles can be obtained by the moderate intake of Biotine, Zinc, Magnesium and Selen. If you want a special brand for such vitamins for your hair and nails I could recommend you some really amazingly working: Phytocyane ( a French brand, containing all needed for the supple skin, great hair and nails, enriched with oils, etc), Dukray capsules, and Merz drages.
Hope that is of help.
Have a great time!

I don't think there is anything wrong with it. It's just a multivitamin. Plus you will have enough folic acid stored up by the time you do get pregnant. The folic acid you already have stored up is used by the fetus, not anything that you take after you conceive. Folic acid is very important in preventing spina bifida.

Absolutely no harm at all. Especially folates. We had prenatal vitamins and special milk for mothers before our daughter was born and she was 3 weeks early and weighed 7 lbs and 11.5 oz, big healthy baby girl.

Now it will just help you get everything you need for hair and nail growth, but unless you're actively trying to conceive it won't do anything for future children.
