My school is having auditions for our production of Grease. The director said that all of those wishing for a lead should prepare 16-32 bars of a ballad and a "peppy" song.

I am a soprano and have a very good range and I also belt pretty well. I really want to wow the director with some fantastic songs and I was wondering if anyone had any song suggestions!

Thanks for any input!

Just left this answer for someone else in your exact position.

Look into the following upbeat, soprano pieces:
"Much More" from The Fantasticks
"I Caint Say No" from Oklahoma
"Show Me" from My Fair Lady
"The Lonely Goatherd" from The Sound of Music
"Glitter and Be Gay" from Candide
"A Little Bit of Good" from Chicago

You can search by voice type, type of song, age range... it's great.

Songs that parallel certain ideas/moods from Grease are a good choice!

Since it's for a musical, sing a song from another musical! A great one especially for a high pitch is "I feel pretty" from West Side Story. A little uncoventional, but shows you can have fun and take a chance. (That's the peppy choice) May not show your entire range, but shows some acting chops and still a challenging song if done correctly! And ties in well with Grease and the idea of Sandra and her trasnformation!

For a ballad, how about Summertime from Porgy and Bess?? Beautiful song for a soprano. I used to sing it all of the time. And again ties in with the summertime feel of Grease. Hope you liked my ideas and good luck! (Or break a leg!)

The songs that really show your vocal range and ability to sing your scales are the diva songs, you know Barbara STreisland, WHitney Houston, Celine.
Not everybody can sing their songs in karaoke, you have to have some talent and vocal range.
So if you pick out one of their songs for ballad, and practice a lot, that might be a good choice.

Why not pick a song from Grease.
