Because it's a myth. As with teenage pregnancy and the other things fed to us. It is indeed false. For example, if a news reporter were speaking in percentages , he may say something like 40% of the black population is incarcerated, while only 15% of the white population is. This does not mean that there are more blacks in jail. It only means that because there are more whites in the world that their percentage in jail is less compared to the overall number of whites in this world.

For the state of Louisiana, Blacks are about 1/3 of the population, but earn about half the income of Whites and about 2/3 of Black children are below the official poverty line.
My guess is many of those incarcerated are poorly educated as well.

You are absolutely right. This is not a myth or a mistake in your research.
Back in 1926 the federal government began to keep records of those who were incarcerated. The results of the statistics they draw also show that in some states nearly 1/2 of those incarcerated are black.
We have come so far in dealing with discrimination and such, but in other ways we haven't come very far.
I don't believe in using any race card to get anywhere in life. But on the other hand it has been tough for blacks in many parts of our country. It has been tough on many races including whites at different times. Where I live, I am white an in a minority. There are many Asians and East Indians where I live.
Some reasons maybe because the opportunities offered were not taken or not offered in getting a better education. Crime begats crime just like welfare families begats welfare families.
I honestly think education is the key to turning this statistic around. Also having the nation become harder on drug dealers and offenders of all races.

It has alot to do with segregation. Most of the black population lives together in really poor neighborhoods. A big part of it is because of the poverty i really think the results would be mixed if the races were mixed evenly over all classes and locations. The culture also has a big part of it since the gangsta rap scene came out it was a reflection of the way many black people lived but now i think that image is now showing young black people that this is normal for themselves and they should stride to commit crime and be materialistic. White kids have Super-man and Spider-man to look up to black kids have CJ from Grand Theft Auto San Andreas and 50 Cent.

it is a matter of ratios- if 50% of the crimes are commited by x types then logically and realistically 50 % of the population of those prosecuted and in jail should be of x types. X% of crimes are commited by black men therefore X% are in jail- thehigher black crime rate would demand a higher incarceration rate. It is not racist it is fact.
first let me say that my family is multi racial so I am not a bigot ..
I am not a saying that having black skin makes you more inclined to be a criminal - i am saying that for other various societal reasons( some the result of history some the result of choices and some of programs that perpetuate destructive cultures) that are present within the black culture - young black men in particular turn to crime as a way of life more often that other groups do ( reasons like poverty, lack of education, a culture that has a high rate of absent fathers, non traditional/ non married parents/ family. and an out of wedlock birth rate of +65% etc)
The difficult part to discussing this issue is that we all want to assign balme to someone for the problem. IE we want to be a victim who deserves compensation or we want tIo say it is not our issue becuase we did not create it.
WE need to stop blaming each other and assume responsiblity for ourselves and those around us. For ourselves-If we do not want our kids to end up in jail we need to not have kids if we cannot provide a solid family, education and mentoring. For others we need to look around to those who are tryingto break these terrbile cycles of vilance and poverty and offer a helping hand ( not handout) when they need it to move beyond where they are.
Just because someone harmed your grandfather does not mena that you are owed anything and just because you are blessed not to have been bornin a cylce of cialence an pverty does not mena you do not have an obligation to help those who were. slef responsiblity with a desire and willingness to help others better themseleves is the answer.
This from a 42 white single educated father of one adopted black son, one white foster son, and one mixed.
It may not be my fault but it is my resposonsiblity to help those who need it without enabling them to continue to think and act like anyone owes them more htatn the same chance i have..

If you watch the news you will see that the people committing most of the crimes are black, so therefore, more black people get arrested. I know every time law enforcement go after blacks for a crime blacks yell it's them being racist and want to know why they aren't going after a white person, well, a white person didn't commit the crime. But, when whites commit crimes, cops go after them also.

Could it be possible that your stats are wrong? Could it be that many young black men have a grudge against society? Could it that maybe more young black men need to stop blaming and start taking responsibility and get out of the poverty?
