You can use iTunes without an iPod - you will be able to play the music files on your PC (iTunes uses AAC as the file format, not MP3).

You can legally buy music from a variety of different online sources (napster, yahoo music, itunes) but not all of these files will work with all portable music players.

Music purchased on iTunes can only be played back on an iPod - you cannot add it to a Dell player or a Microsoft Zune (for example).

The iPod is by far the best music player in the market (tit also supports MP3 files in addition to iTunes AAC files).

The easiest, simplest, and best solution for you is to purchase an iPod for your daughter (either an iPod nano or an iPod video).

Good luck

From iTunes to your computer - No, you don't need an iPod
From iTunes to your iPod - Yes, but it doesn't have to be an "iPod", it can be any mp3 player like a "Dell DJ" or a "Creative Zen"
