Saltwater has a significantly lower freezing point than fresh water: At 3.5% salinity, freezing point is 28.5 degrees Fahrenheit, instead of 32 degrees at 0% salinity.

So as the air cools, fresh water will freeze long before salt water freezes.

As salt water freezes much of the salt is expelled from the water.

it makes the water a solution thus altering the properties. The addition of salt raises the boiling point and and lowers the freezing point.

Because salt when added to water acts as an impurity . Impurities decrease freezing point of water &
Increase boiling point as well.

the addition of salt to water lowers the freezing point of water. that's why they salt the roads before a big snowstorm.

Salt dissolved in water acts as an insulator and lowers the freezing point necessary for ice to form. Freshwater doesn't have that same advantage.

the salt interferes with the waters ability to interact with itself it gets in the way of the water molecules and makes it harder for them to pack together.
