3 salesmen go to a hotel - all there is is 1 room for $30. Each man chips in $10 and go to their room. The manager realizes he overcharged them by $5, so he gives it to his bellboy to take back to the men. Since they couldn't split $5, they gave the bellboy a $2 tip and kept $1 each. So, each man paid $9, which equals $27 and the bellboy has $2. $27 + $2 = $29. Where is the extra dollar?

The men paid $27 (3 x $9). $2 went to the bellboy and $25 went to the manager for the room.

$27 *minus* $2 = $25

Nothing is missing!

The men paid $30, but the room cost $25. So the hotel manager keeps his $25, the friends get back $1 each and the bellboy gets $2. All is OK. (25+3+2=30)

After the hotel manager gives the bellboy five dollars, each of the salesmen has paid $8.33 towards their room. ($25/3) now they give the bellboy $2 (that makes $27 so far) then they each get back one more dollar ($3) this all adds up to $30. So each man actually paid $8.33, kept a dollar, and gave the bellboy $0.67 adding up to $10 each.

PUZZLING: They originally paid $30. If they each got $1 back and the bellboy got $2, that = $29.
Ive actually heard this before but cant remember the answer. ;P

The manager has $25, the bellboy has $2, and each man has $1. Each man did not pay $9. Each man paid $25 divided by $3 which is $7.33.

$7.33 x 3 = $25
plus bellboy $2
man 1 $1
man 2 $1
man 3 $1
-----------------------
$30

it's actually 2 plus 25, because 30-5 equals 25 plus 2 bucks = 27 bucks divide by 3 =9

NOT FUNNY: 1. If they drove 24 hours straight, they'd already be there and wouldn't need a hotel. 2. You know the rate and are charged when you check into a hotel, not when you checkout.

I askes the same riddle a month ago. It should be calculated like this.

25/3 = 8.33 each
+ 1 each = 9.33 each
2/3 = 0.667 each
so. 9.33 + 0.667 = 10 each.
