What is the difference between divisions I, II, and III? And how is it determined who gets to be in what division?

I think you're talking about college sports.

Traditionally, it's determined by the prestige and the funding a school has with regards to any given category in sports. For example: Michigan has a division 1-A football team, but a division 1-AA basketball team (the As are subdivisions).

Division 1's the highest and is what you watch on TV for National and Regional sports. Division 2 and 3 are seen locally only (if they're on TV at all). They can more often than not be heard on radio stations though.
