Depending on the browser you use, most all of them have security settings where you can set what can be viewed on your computer. Additionally, you can make global changes to your childs login profile on your computer which will control what programs that they can have access to and whatnot. Start with the sites below..
Don't download any 'Toolbars' from the net, you're going to wind up with a bunch of spyware on your computer if you do. Use the settings in your computer's browser and operating system. Stay away from the toolbars!

u have to click on the tools menu option at the top, then click on the internet option , then click on the security tab, click on the resticted site and add the site which u dont want him to see,
the next option is click on the tools menu option at the top, then click on the internet option , then click on the privacy menu and thne u can keep the security high and it will block most of the website, but what will happen here is u will not be able to view the secured sites like bank sites and online shoping coz the security level is high,
the best option is download the application like Granny and other that are avilable on the internet for free, that will restrict the bad web site
Use Internet Explorer 7 that has a good parental control, but the problem with this explorer is that if u r not using win XP SP 2 you computer will freeze up and it has a lots of bugs

Parental Controls.
They provide awesome protection and full control...!
U can try the all new Internet Explorer 7 in Windows Vista.
(Windows Vista comes with an excellent Parental Control System which is simple, easy, powerful and one of the best!)
More here : http://www.windowsvista.com
Alternatively., a more easier and no frills solution would be to use Windows Live OneCare Family Safety. It is an excellent option if u r not using Windows Vista.

The best advice I can give you is to keep your computer in a "public space" of the house, and learn how to check your internet history, and more importantly, your temporary files (kids will know to clear the history, hopefully not the files, although they're probably more savvy then I was as a kid). Anyway, filters are good too, so I'm not saying don't get one, but they aren't perfect. So be prepared for some active parenting.

There are tools out there that block most of the bad sites. In our home - we require that our child only be on the computer in the open living area. No computers in bedrooms or closed spaces.

Use a 'Parental Control Toolbar'. There are many such available for free over the net. You can search and download anyone.
