Finding the Greatest common factor

6 divided by 2 = 3

3 divided by 3 = 1

6 = 2 x 3

The common factors for 6 are 2 x 3

24 divided by 2 = 12

12 divided by 2 = 6

6 divided by 2 = 3

3 divided by 3 = 1

24 = 2 x 2 x 2 x 3

The common factors fo 24 are 2 x 2 x 2 x 3

6 = 2 x 3

24 = 2 x 2 x 2 x 3

Notice there are 2 and 3 in both factors

you want to use the numbers that are similar in both factors to obtain the Greatest common Factor

The Greatest Common Factor is 2 x 3 = 6

The GCF = 6
