Disrespectful to the teacher and other students because of the distraction. Plus the chewer is more intent on chewing their gum than on what's going on in class.

i'm a subject of that rule myself, and even though i find it annoying most of the time (why cant they just let us chew gum!?) i can sort of understand why the schools would do that.
first off, as you said, there's that annoying chewing sound that some people make (rudely enough, its one of my pet peeves) when they're chewing gum, distracting people... and all that.
but mostly i think it's the fact that after they're done chewing with the gum--the taste is gone, the gum is stale--what most kids do is stick the gum onto the underside of the desks. you've seen it before. it's pretty disgusting. wads and wads of chewed up, stale gum squished onto the bottom of the table, pink and green and blue all mixed up, formng a sticky, horrifying mess?
well, the school feels the same way.
they don't want you messing up the desks and having to buy new desks all over again just because they allowed their students to chew gum during class.
and sure, they could make up a rule about not sticking gum onto the bottom of the tables, but people would do it anyway.
it's just a precaution, plus, people often see it as disrespectful when someone's talking to you and you're chewing something.
hope this helps!

Because for the most part people forget that they even have the gum and begin chomping or blowing bubbles or playing with it in the many numerous ways there are to forget about what the hell you're doing. Seriously, you do it and you don't even realize it. Even when you try to hide it and you're talking people pay attention the mouth and then they start trying to figure what the hell you have in there. Gum is very taboo in the professional world, it can ruin a business deal and give a horrible first impression.

I think that more or less it is just annoying. Teachers that hear a million bubbles pop everyday are going to get sick of gum chewers. I never had this problem. All through middle and high school we were allowed to chew gum as long as the teachers never saw it.

Hm, I thought you can chew gum in college, or it's on a teacher to teacher basis; I've done it before to try to keep myself awake when really tired.
People still stick it everywhere though; it is gross. The banning of gum never stopped that in my old schools though. I don't know if it were allowed it would be worse or what, but . . .

its a matter of respect, etiquette and nothing to do with freedom of action. when you're old enough to have kids and then they keep on chewing while you're talking / advising them - you will soon realize that they're not paying attention to you. yah! those disgusting gums under the desks. it shld be banned as we are not responsible enough to dispose the gum in a proper and civilised manner. i heard in singapore country, to solve the problem they stop selling gum in the city. you can chew but where to buy it!!!!

It takes some brain cells to chew and in school they should all be on classes. Also the sound of the popping is distracting to other students. It keeps them awake...lol

I think you answered it yourself with disgusting, annoying and loud. Also it impedes the ability to answer questions or participate in discussions clearly. In addition, many students do not dispose of used gum properly and it ends up on desks, walls, ceilings, shut into books, etc.

who knows?!.. chewing gum has actually been proven to help with your concentration.. you would think that the freedom of the choice would be left up to the student.. we're not in prison, right?... maybe people do pop their gum too much.. punish them.. not EVERYONE....and something that really ticks me off.. teachers that enforce the rules seem to be the ones that chew gum the most themselves.. O.o .... but w/e... i prefer to chew gum in class and will continue.. no matter how many essays i have to write lol

Because a long time ago janitors got tired of scraping it from the bottom of desks and banned together to get this rule passed. It doesn't solve the problem, but I would imagine it limits it a bit.
Or maybe they are trying to teach you discipline and etiquette.
