My sister's 2003 car has this. A new or almost new BMW had this (friend's), and my old car has this. Is this typical or something's amiss?

Pumping the gas peddle will do nothing. That only works on carburated engines, which are almost extinct. A slight gas smell only on cold starts is normal. The engine allows more fuel when cold and the catalytic converter is not warm enough to take care of the extra.

You should never pump the accelerator on injected engines. It sounds like you have a problem, should get it looked at This should come under emission system and should be under warranty for 5 years

Are you pumping the gas pedal when you start these cars? Fuel injection systems don't handle that pumping the pedal action well.

i own a repair shop, and on some cars you,ll notice a slight smell but on some of them its, not real normal to smell this,it might mean you have a exhaust leak or an actual raw gas leak on the car,,it might be a good idea to at least have it checked just to be sure,if its a real strong gas smell it isn't normal at all,,good luck with it,i hope this help,s.
