I also live in ny and i am on wic. My appt was orignally scheduled for 3 weeks after my due date. Due to the fact that i had my baby early i called wic and made a appt asap. They gave me an appt for the day after i was released from the hospital. In the hopsital, they will give the baby formula. When you go to wic for the checks they will ask you what kind of formula the baby is taking. In the hospital the baby will use similac or enfamil with iron. At least that is what they gave my son. When he was in the hospital he was eating similac with iron. When the ped in the hospital released my son he switched it to enfamil. After i asked him why he said that it was the same thing. He has been drinking enfamil since i got his checks and he is fine. Good luck Just to let you know i live in bronx, but i had my son in bronville at lawrence hospital

The WIC in Southern California does not give a choice without a doctors note. Wic will give you similac since that is who they are contracted with, and they will give regular formula. The only way they give you anything different including soy is if you take them a note from the doctor requesting a different formula. They will not give any different just by you asking. When you go to Wic, take the baby, make sure you take the baby's crib card from the hospital and the temporary hospital birth certificate, otherwise they will send you home and reschedule your appointment. Call WIC ahead of time and ask them if there are any restrictions and what to bring to your first apt with the baby, since different wics may vary. WIC are very big on breastfeeding, have you given it any consideration. Breast is Best is the motto. It is so much healthier for the baby. It boosts their immunity along with many other benefits. My kids were not sick once during their entire first year since I breastfed them both for almost a year. WIC will also give you Formula if you decide to do both, along with Milk, eggs, cheese, carrots tuna etc if you do both, otherwise they cut the milk, egg etc once you've delivered if you only formula feed

Ok most wic offices will give you somthing along the lines of Similac w/ iron! Which isn't that bad but it is somtimes really hard on the babys tummy! The only way that they usually let you switch the formula is you have to have a written paper from your babys doctor saying what kind!

That Good Start is pretty good for kids and WIC will cover it but you must have a paper from your doctor saying that he wants the baby on that!

I'm telling you have them give that to the baby at the hospital too! You won't regret it!

I was on WIC and they let me choose what kind I wanted. Im not sure what area you are in though, so it may be different for you. My baby was on similac, then I had to switch to Isomil. I didnt have any problems with WIC letting me switch either. they will probably just ask you what brand you would like, and the nurses at the hospital when you have the baby will help you decide what is best for the baby.
Good Luck, and Congratulations!!

It's not that simple. You may choose the brand from a list of choices they give you. If your baby is reacting badly to a certain formula, you must get a note from your doctor in order to be approved for something other then WIC's formula list. Something else to think about...breastfeeding is almost always going to be better for your baby. Good luck!

The doctor will tell you what type of formula to feed the baby. You will get a voucher from wic to use at the store.

I don't know about New York, but in Indiana WIC gives Enfamil brand formula. My son was on Isomil Advance, but we had to switch to Prosobee Lipil.

If you gave the office a call, I'm sure they could tell you. That way, you wouldn't start on one kind, and then have to switch it later.

Good luck and congratulations!

AS FAR WHAT WIC GIVES IT DEPENDS ON WHAT COMPANY YOUR STATE HAS A CONTRACT WITH FOR A SPECIAL REBATE ACCORDING TO THE USDA WEBSITE. FURTHUR RESEARCH SHOWS THAT NEW YORK PROVIDES ENFAMIL. YOU CAN SIGN UP TO RECIEVE COUPONS AND FREE SAMPLES AT http://www.enfamil.com/programs/index.html

MOST OF THE TIME BRANDS ARE A MATTER OF PERSONAL CHOICE. JUST STICK TO EITHER MILK BASED OR SOY BASED DEPENDING ON WHAT WORKS FOR YOUR BABY. THE HOSPITAL SHOULD GIVE YOU SAMPLES OF WHAT THEY RECOMMEND. ALSO YOU SHOULD GET INTO WIC VERY SOON.

DON'T BE AFRAID TO USE THE STORE BRAND UNTIL YOU GET TO WIC. MY SON PERFERS TO HAVE WAL-MART'S PARENTS CHOICE. IT IT ONLY $10 FOR A LARGE CAN

The hospital asked me which formula I wanted to feed the baby. Then they gave me free samples. I didn't get on WIC until my baby was 10 months old, but when I did they asked me what formula she ate and that's what they gave me. Good Luck!
