Guards abuse their knees more than centers or power forwards. Guards are usually smaller in height compared to towering centers and forwards so they have to exert more effort in jumping to reach the hoop. Moreover, they run the floor more throughout their careers so it eventually takes its toll as their playing years go up.

With age you get slower and can't keep up with the youngins. So for guards who must rely on their speed and quick thinking they just eventually start to lose they're game compared to the up and coming guards. For any forward if you can keep up with the pace of the game and still get under the basketball you're good to go.
