Back when it was novel back in the 70s, the right ear meant you were gay. That lasted about one month. There isn't a gay ear. The girl is just acting out and thats the best she could come up with.

Hey I tell you for what I know. Im from Puerto Rico and there are stories about pirates that tell that to identify the only gay guy in the ship, the guy should get a piercing in his right ear. And I believe that's where it came from. Me personally dont think that it makes you gay to have a piercing regardless of the location in your body. I do know that some dudes look really hot with they ears pierce...

I wish it was as easy as which ear one has pierced to tell which guys are on my team! I hate not being able to tell if a guy is gay or not. I work in retail in a store that a lot of men shop in and love so there are a lot of men there on a regular basis and I would say that about 75% of them are HOT in my books! I just wish there was a way of telling if they were on my team so I could ask them out on a date! With my luck I would be asking the str8 ones and would get punched in the face or something mean like that.
And about the ear piercing thing and being gay, I agree with a lot of the other answers on here that at one point in time it was true but now nobody seems to care and they wear it in which ever ear they like!
When I was a kid the only guys I remember having pierced ears where pirates and of course that was just seen in pics or on TV.
*hugs*

And when I was in High School; If you wore white sox on Wednesday, you were queer, and Purple clothes meant you were queer. If it bothers him that much : Get the other ear done also. My Anglo son works with Jamaican men, pretty funny, they are all twice his size. When his wife of 5 years left him for another man, the Jamaicans took him out, relieved his pain, and to prove he was a MAN, pierced both his ears and put diamond studs in and sent him home to Mamma!
So pierce the other ear, or take the ring out, or BE a MAN and except the talk until it goes away!
My choice is pierce both ears! Until summer., then let them both heal up and maybe you son will have grown up enough to accept the heat for his personal choices.

First, reassure your son that getting one ear pierced doesn't mean he's gay and other people's opinions of him are not important. I know: he's a kid, and therefore will allow the words of others to define who he is. But it doesn't hurt to let him know that he doesn't need to pay attention to what some bratty girl said to him today.
As others have noted, it used to be "a sign" if you had your right ear pierced that you are gay. But nowadays there are a lot of guys (including athletes) who have *both* ears pierced. And gay men pierce plenty of other body parts, too.

there is no set standard any more. right, left or both its a matter of preference and actually being gay means you are gay. in today's world we need to teach our children to understand diversity and to try to learn about something before making an opinion. the lil girl is only repeating what she has been taught. as long as your son is taught that having a different opinion is not necessarily wrong but a way of the world he will grow up with far more confidence than the girl.

Gay guys started the trend of guys getting their ears pierced, and having the left ear pierced meant that you preferred being dominant and having the right ear pierced meant that you preferred being submissive. Straight guys started getting their ears pierced and then there was the saying 'right is wrong' (which meant having the right ear pierced meant being gay). Now, it just means that you have a pierced ear.

properly for sure some human beings nonetheless think of that for the reason that this question keeps arising. So once you're worried some random stranger (who's out of the loop, pun meant) would get the incorrect concept, then get the two ears pierced. it particularly is the norm in recent times any way.

This "Left-Right Earring Rule" doesn't apply anymore. This was a brief thing in the '80s. Once everybody started to get everything pierced, then that rule went out the window!

With how common body modification has become neither ear is considered a gay piercing anymore. Heck, there's guys with spacers in both ears. That doesn't mean that they're bi. They're just being stupid little kids trying to get ahead by picking on others.

In the old days, left meant 'straight' and right meant 'gay,' or so the old wives tale goes. But many people today pierce both, or either, or neither, and don't really care. Tell him the other girl is wrong. The old saying is "left is right and right is wrong," but I don't like saying it because there isn't a thing wrong with either ear, nor with being gay.
