Shipping costs definately influence whether or not I make a purchase.

For example, on E-bay I see some tricky tricky people. Like a shirt I want perhaps could be 25 dollars and let's say that's in my price range. However, people on E-bay tend to drop the price on the actual item, and JACK UP the shipping to OUTRAGEOUS amounts like 20.95 for shipping on a 25 dollar tshirt! And at that point, not only is the price of the shirt+shipping out of my price range, I doub't I'd want to do buisness with someone who does that. Sellers try to get the attention of the buyer by posting a cheap price of an item, and as you read further into the details you find out the shipping is outrageous!

Sorry for ranting! But it bothers me! I'll see somthing I like that's in my price range, get my hopes up and even get excited to buy it, and at the bottom of the page in tiny print it says "SHIPPING- 21.95"...outrageous!

1. The cost of shipping is EXTREAMLY imporatant to me when shopping online. For example, if an item is comming from China (20 dollars or more in shippin) and the price is low...by the time I add on the shipping I might as well buy the same item for a slightly higher price from a seller near by. Another problem with high shipping costs is that if the item is not correct or dosn't fit and I want to return it I have to pay THAT shipping as well! Infact, my mom won't even shop online because she dosn't want to pay the shipping. She would rather buy it for the same price minus the shipping at a local store. 2. Knowing the cost of shipping before I enter the checkout page is CRUCIAL. It effects the total cost and therefore it could cause me to not want the item in the end. Knowing that price will save me a step in my decision about the item. :D

1 Yes.
2 Very.

For too many places I shop at, duty factors in to it too. If they're huge, like Lands' End, and want to collect and otherwise handle the duty for me, that's a plus.

As somebody mentioned, the shipping prices some eBay sellers are asking nowadays are outrageous -- especially if you're not in the US. I can see asking for a wee bit more for the hassle of a Customs chit, but I'm in Canada; it does not cost US$20 to mail me a shirt. I barely bother with eBay nowadays; didn't used to be like that, though...

I am very happy with places that have a flat rate after a certain $ amount, and am encouraged to make large orders in one go. Free shipping specials are always a plus.

It's not the most critical thing for me, but it's definitely important.

If you're thinking of opening an on-line store, or you already have one: explain what the shipping costs go to if they look at all high. Even something like "we use a sturdy cardboard mailer, not a flimsy envelope" helps. And, offer the odd shipping discount or freebie to entice first-time customers to return.

Shipping costs do not influence my decision as much as the return policy. Sometimes you pay to have the item shipped back also! That can end up costing you more that the item itself.
