There's this girl that lives near me and she always seems to have a problem, but its practically impossible to sort everything she does and talks about out. Do you think she's just looking for attention or is she genuinely messed up to the point where she not only craves, but requires someone else's oversight. I'd like to help her, but I dunno if I'm just wasting my time trying to feel good about helping someone else.

I thought the whole point of helping someone else was to do it to make them feel good, not make yourself feel good. anyway, there could be a number of reasons why she acts the way she does. first of all, how old is she? who does she live with? (parents, boyfriend, husband, girlfriend) because they could be contributing to how she is acting. Her need for attention could be a cry for help, or she could just be someone who likes attention. I would get to know her a little more if you really want to help her. find out whats goin on in her life and such. you should, then, be able to pinpoint what seems to be the problem, if there is one.

Hypochondria (or hypochondriasis, sometimes referred to as health anxiety or health phobia) is a somatoform disorder in which one has the unfounded belief that one is suffering from a serious illness. Hypochondria is often characterized by irrational fears of being diseased/dying, obsessions over minor bodily symptoms or imperfections, doubt and disbelief in doctors' diagnosis, constant self-examination and self-diagnosis and preoccupation with one's body. Hypochondriacs often require constant reassurance, sometimes from multiple doctors, family and friends.

Hypochondria is often associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and anxiety, and can also be brought on by stress.

How can she be all those things? You should probably stay away from her; sounds like she is manipulating you and you don't sound pleased to help her.

She could very well need help, but there's one hitch. If she doesn't want it your waisting your time. You could give it a try and see what happens.
