On the orginal album cover there was a sticker that said that the
album contained secret backward messages and the songs "Mr. Roboto", "Don't Let It End", and "Heavy Metal Posioning". I think I
have heard the backward messages in Mr. Roboto. the line "My true identity" when played in reverse says "Jesus Lay Down", I think. In "Don't Let It End" the line "Baby we could have so much more, more, more" when played in reverse says "Oh *&^%? I could be with any". Whatever that means. Any Styx fans out there know or have heard these backward messages?.

Wow... I remember that when it was first released over two decades ago, but never heard any more about it nor tried playing the record backwards since at that time I was just recording LPs to tape to play in my car, boombox or Walkman. That is a studio recording technique called Backmasking (see link below) which was initially pioneered bi The Beatles in the late 1960s, most notoriously the "White Album" and the bizarre studio track experiment "Revolution Number 9" from where Charles Manson claimed he derived a great many of his psycho messages. ELO did quite a bit of it with their albums (Face The Music, Discovery) as did a few other rock groups from the 70s and 80s including Styx. "Mr. Roboto" came out just before CDs made it to the market, so probably that is why the 'controversy' had no staying power as did previous LPs like "Paradise Theater" and "Cornerstone" which both theoretically used some backmasking.

Several fundamental Christian talking heads said the techinique was a tool for Satan and all of a sudden, 'everything' was backmasked and listened to for messages that our brain would somehow encode being played backwards. There were entire groups devoted to listening 24/7 to popular music albums being played backwards, one of them spearheaded an anti-rock movement led bi a pastor named Bob Larson (see link below), who got a ton of press coverage and still does today with his exorcism ministry. they even went after record cover art for hidden messages - again, Styx and ELO were the primary targets of being labeled as into 'Divination' - something they called a Satanic ritual or practice. It got way out of hand in the early 80s with entire hours os shows on Christian televsion (not CBN or Pat Robertson, however), then all of a sudden, a few years later, no one cared anymore... maybe, because we all transitioned to CDs and cannot play them backwards unless we have a professional studio or DJ model CD player to decipher these theoretically 'evil' messages. LOL. I guess it was never any real big deal, huh?

P.S.>>>My personal opinion on this? If one listens to almost any music backwards repetively and wants to sit there for hours wasting so much of their lives doing so, then they will find all sorts of messages, whether intended or 'done purely bi the devil' out of 'coincidence' (as some claimed) and see evil everywhere in secular music. Why? Because if you look for the bad in life or the evil in life, you will find it, whether it is truly there or not... you open a door to it - besides, it's everywhere and not hard to find - just look on the news. However, why would any sane person want to look for evil? Why not look for the good in things like I used to do and still do listening to these theoretically 'Satanic' groups. Styx and ELO made phenomenal albums as did so many others being labeled as evil. Why not appreciate the beauty and creativity put into their music when it still existed? Nowadays, it's all originated with a sampler, computers and a songwriters' pool... too bad that what was really great music was constantly attacked until rock and roll became nearly extinct.
