ok when I start my car it dies unless I give it gas, it's a automatic, then once I have it going I still have to give it gas so it does not die, when I am at a red light or stop sign I have to hold in the brake and gas at the same time so it does not die on me. It is a 1996 v4 i believe. Any help would be appreciated. thanks.

It could be one of three things;
1 the idle air control jammed shut.
2 EGR jammed wide open.
3 large vacuum leak.

I'd start at the fuel filter, if it's clogged a little, it may not be letting enough gas get through to keep an idle. Second, I'd check out the MAP sensor, it's fairly inexpensive and easy to replace, but can cause all kinds of headaches if it's bad. Vacuum leaks can also cause rough idles, so you might run through your vac-lines and check them out. This is just where I'd start because it's better to start cheap and work your way up rather than doing it in reverse.

Your information is a little skimpy, but the first step is diagnostics.
Check with the nice fellows at the local discount parts store and ask them to retrieve any DTCs stored in the PCM.
This will give you some perspective as where to look and what to do.
Unless you are really familiar with computer controlled mechanical devices, you are most likely going to want to take it to a repair facility. It doesn't HAVE to be the dealer. You can go to the dealer or look for an independent shop displaying the blue and white ASE shingle.

Good Luck & Merry Christmas

i own a repair shop,and you either have a bad fuel filter on it,, or a fuel pump going bad on it,,its not getting enough fuel to it at all to run good,and last but but not least of all it can be the idle air control valve going bad on it,this is what makes it start up good,and idle good ,if this goes it just about wont idle at all,,check all of this and see,i hope this help,s.,,you can also take this by any auto zone,and they will scan it for free this might help narrow it down a little for you,,good luck.
