Schooling. A psychiatrist is an M.D., first through 4-year college, then medical school, specializing in psychiatry. He can prescribe prescription drugs. A Psychologist is also schooled but without the medical license, can't prescribe drugs.

A psychiatrist has a medical doctor's degree, but a psychologist does not. In this respect, the psychiatrist is more trained than a psychologist.

A psychiatrist is allowed to prescribe medicine, essentially holding a medical degree. A psychologist doesn't hold a medical degree and cannot prescribe medicine.
