Nothing, really. What is west is also east. San Francisco is west of New York because you can go west across the US from New York to San Francisco. But also San Francisco is east of New York, because you can cross the Atlantic, go across Europe and Asia, then cross the Pacific Ocean to get to San Francisco. If you go east far enough, you get back to where you started. So every place is east of itself, and also west of itself.

North and South are not like that. You can't go any farther north than the North Pole, or any farther south than the South Pole. There are no East or West Poles.

Perhaps one could define x as being east of y if going east from x to y is shorter than going west from x to y. A similar definition could define west.

maizy and Roman Soldier together have given you the answer.

The Prime Meridian, in Greenwich, England, is regarded as the dividing line between East and West ... NOT because there is anything magical about that location, but because people agreed to define the Greenwich Observatory as the point of 0 longitude (i.e., neither East nor West).

From Greenwich, we measure longitude by how many degrees east or west of Greenwich any other point on earth is. The farthest any place can be from Greenwich (longitudinally) is 180 degrees. Note that 180 degrees East longitude and 180 degrees West longitude are at the same place (opposite Greenwich, England on the globe). You could say that the 180 degree meridian ALSO separates east and west. However, The Prime Meridian is generally regarded as the correct answer.to the question.

The Prime Meridian divides East from West, however it is an imaginary line; therefore, it has no real measurement. In all actuality, it depends at which angle you're looking at a replica of the globe that is Earth. The Equater divides North and South, just as an FYI, and it works the same way as the Prime Meridian. Basically, it's there as a guideline for navigation and time zones and things such as those.

The Prime Meridian is NOT the divide of East and West as many of the previos posts seem to suggest. It is infact the INTERNATIONAL DATE LINE. When looking at a regular map, to the right of the IDL is West and to the left is East. This is also shown in terms of time. New Zealand is many hours ahead of USA even though they are only an ocean apart.

I think east and west just go around the earth on and on with no division. It is measured by longitude.

that's rather scary, run down, commonly business and extraordinarily a lot "at your individual threat", if you're a concentrated visitor to boot as someone residing there. when I lived in l. a. and ny, I said that Jersey city, Compton, Harlem and the Bronx were a lot extra like accepted cities without each and every of the homicide and a intense crime price. when I attend A's video games or visit eating places in that section, when I get homestead, a homicide or robbery almost continually occurs there when I watch the files. not particular why the spike in crimes and murders.....
