Two of the most famous U.S. mathematicians of the past half century were Saunders Mac Lane (often misspelled as MacLane; U. of Chicago) and Garrett Birkhoff (Harvard), whose book "A Survey of Modern Algebra" must have been studied by literally hundreds of thousands of young mathematicians around the world.
There's an amusing story about Birkhoff, who was not noted for excessive modesty. He was once invited to give a special lecture at the University of Mexico in Mexico City, and evidently did a splendid job. So much so that the President of the University later wrote to him at Harvard, to say that "We so much enjoyed and appreciated your superb lecture. We should like to continue with additional lectures by the intellectual world's leading figures, following this wonderful beginning. I am therefore asking you if you would be so kind as to recommend to us other savants of your stature?"
To which Birkhoff replied, "I regret to inform you that there ARE no other savants of my stature." (!!)
To find information about other great (and largely U.S.) mathematicians, you might try looking up "Fields medal" in Google or Yahoo.
Good luck!
Live long and prosper.
P.S. Albert Einstein (see above) was NOT a mathematician; he was of course the world's most famous PHYSICIST, born in Ulm, Germany, taking out Swiss citizenship later, before ultimately becoming a naturalized U.S. citizen. And Alan Turing was BRITISH, never having or even contemplating U.S. citizenship, even though he did do his Ph.D. at Princeton under Alonzo Church. (There's simply too much MISINFORMATION on the web!)
There are many great naturalized U.S. mathematicians, including a surprisingly large number of originally Polish origin --- John (a.k.a. "Johnnie") Von Neumann for one, and Stanislaus Ulam for another. They were part of a simply incredible group of Jewish mathematicians who left Europe in the great 1930's exodus before the Second World War.
