Were you sponsored by your current employer? if yes than the answer is no. As a temporary worker who has been sponsored by an employer in Canada, that employer is responsible for you to the government. If you leave their employ, your permit will be suspended and you will be put on the next plane home. You can however check with immigration and you may qualify for an exemption if you have a skilled trade. This is a very touchy subject in Alberta as there are many unionized trades people waiting for work in the non unionized sector. This will become a boiling point in the next provincial election.
Good luck!
