What is the definition of the word "liberal"?

In terms of political orientation, there IS no hard and fast definition of what a "liberal" is. The definition of who is "liberal" (or conservative for that matter) and for what reasons has varied throughout history, and varries from country to country, and also from person to person. It's all very subjective.

limited government, free markets. what is considered a "right wing libertarian" today. back in the 1890's socialists appropriated the term for themselves, but this is strictly an american thing. everywhere else the word liberal still means low taxes, no government social programs and unlimited income potential.

liberalism was the political philosophy which came out of the enlightenment. it is basicly a form of republicanism where more rights are reserved by the people - the maximal amount, ideally.
