I have a small office with a metal door that opens from the street to the inside waiting area. I often get to the office in the morning at the time of the appointment but the client might come early. Can I install a door lock that will unlock at a given preset timer ather than by just a key?

Sounds like a pretty bad idea. If they are early it's their fault. You are obligated to get there on time or a little early. Without a battery back up every power inturuption would effect the time the door opens. Unless you get real fancy it will open on days you are closed. You are setting yourself up for a mugging.
