my boyfriend just replaced EVERY part in his bronco. he drove it for about a year and now it wont start. when you try to start it, it makes a noise like.....click...click...click...click...it is not the starter. does anybody have any ideas about what it could be?

If the starter is engaging and disengaging properly, there might be a tooth broken on the fly wheel, or (hopefully not) the motor might have seized... Ask him if, when he did the oil change last, he remembered to put new oil in it....

I don't know how old your bronco is, but my dad had an old ford pickup. It went through solenoids about 1 every 2 or so years. On the older fords, it's probably mounted on the firewall. Follow the positive battery cable from the battery, it will take you to the solenoid.

While your at it, check your cables for corrosion. On older vehicles, the battery cables can corrode and the starter won't get the power it needs to turn the engine. Check all of your connections from the battery to the solenoid to the starter and from the battery to the main engine ground. If any of them are loose, the starter won't get the power it needs to turn the engine.

Hopefully your bf has enough sense to keep the engine filled with oil... if not, then you'll need an engine =)

could be many things

1. check the battery TERMINALS are tight and secure

2. check the BATTERY (turn the light on if dim it may need recharging) (if this is your problem you may have to get your alternator checked or make sure noone left the light on)

or

Jump start the batteries using another vehicle (be careful you can do this safely. some onboard computers can burn out doing this method)

3. Ignition switch: use cables (or screwdriver) and jump the electrodes on the starter motor (just touch them and it should kick over)

4. starter motor: crash start / push the truck while in 2nd gear and slowly release the clutch (providing your gearbox is manual / shift) also pushing the thing to and fro while its in gear can unjam a starter

using these methods you can eliminate the possibilities to the problem

broken teeth on the starter or flywheel makes a 'whirring' sound rather than a 'click' because it still spins just doesnt connect

Clicking is the sound of the starter solenoid not having enough power. It usually is caused by a weak battery. Try jump starting the vehicle, or charging the battery. With colder weather, batteries will tend to start to fail.

Battery. Check the terminals, if they are clean and tight it might be time to replace the battery.

Or the battery could be fine, just discharged if the alternator isn't working. Did you have any indication of not charging? Dim lights, check battery light?

Jump it. If it starts, put the volt meter across the battery terminals while it's running. If it reads 12 or below, it isn't charging. If it reads around 14 it is.

IF the battery is in good condition ( fully charged ) it sounds like a bad connection....dirty battery terminals OR a bad connection where the battery negative ( ground ) cable attaches. I have also seen the Positive ( red ) battery terminal bad ( the wires broken, rotted off ) even though it LOOKS good. Do a little detective work and see what happens. Good Luck !

the starter might be good . but those trucks have a starter solenoid on the fender. first check your battery. if it is good, and you already checked the starter.check to make sure the power is getting from the battery to the starter.

Try the starter solenoid on the fire wall.Make sure battery cables are tight.Depending on the year see if it has a ballast resistor. If it does replace it.

An extremely dead battery will cause it to not even try and turn over. It'll just click.
