The current recommendation is air dry, but I prefer the alcohol square wipes -great for a wet sticky smelly umbilical. I like to buy those alcohol wipe squares that are individually wrapped at the drugstore or Wally World- usually 2 or 3 bucks. They are usually in first aid or near the diabetic supplies/test strips. Another plus - easy to keep a few at the diaper change area and in the diaper bag. Some hospitals are still using them and give a batch to you before you go home. I'm a mom to 4. I believe the alcohol keeps it cleaner and helps it dry out and hence fall off quicker. Especially for boys who have a tendency to pee up the front of the diaper so it may not be dry for long.

The doctors now say let it air dry BUT in my experience when I let it air dry on my forth one it got infected(the first 3 we used alcohol and had no problems) and we had to drive her to the hospital because it got red and infected fast. When we went the doctor she took a swab to see if it was infected the test takes 3 or 4 days to get the results. When we left the hospital the Doctor told us to put alcohol on it. When the tests came back it was an infection in her cord and to use alcohol to cure it up. So I would say use alcohol

Whoa: NO ALCOHOL, no peroxide, NOTHING. Just let it air dry.

"That's because a 1998 study by the Hamilton Health Sciences Corporation in Ontario, Canada, found that untreated cords healed in eight days, while it took ten days for alcohol-swabbed cords to fall off. (None of the 1,800 newborns in the study developed an infection.)"

I was told to use just water on a qtip. They say now that alcohol and peroxide irritate the cord causing more discomfort than anything. I did just the water and within 1 week it came off and i continued to clean for a couple more days and all was well.

Rubbing alchoal on a q-tip, 2 x per day. My childrens doctor only recommeneds if the cord is still attached and baby is 2 weeks or older, no water & get plenty of air to cord, do not cover w/ diaper

You really shouldn't try to hurry any natural process where a newborn is concerned, let the belly button area get plenty of air and it'll fall off on it's own in about 3 weeks after birth.
