Well it would defy the constitution of we didn't and forced a religion on his oath to the US Congress.

The LAND OF THE FREE still is the important part to remember.

Of course he/she should.

"The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the members of the several state legislatures, and all executive and judicial officers, both of the United States and of the several states, shall be bound by oath or affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States."

No religious test. The Oath of office is first and foremost a pledge to defend the US Constitution. The "tradition" of pledging on a Bible has existed because it is a book that the majority of public servants hold very sacred as most of them have been Christians. There is no law that requires a Bible to be used nor is there one that says you must say "so help me god".

Yes, it's fine under the 1st amendment. In fact, no scripture of any sort is ever required. you do not even have to swear (Not sure about the Koran, but the Bible says never to swear an oath) you can choose to affirm what you are saying as truth.

But back to your question: the United States is not a Christian nation. the majority of it's people are Christian of one denomination or another, but that is not encoded in law.

Yes. He was elected and that is his religion. Why on earth would we want a politician to take an oath on something he might not believe in. They can take the oath on a Koran in court, he can take his oath on it when he goes to congress.

absolutely, if he wants. If he is not a Christian, why would he use a bible??? Freedom of religon. Nobody says it has to be a bible. It just so happens the vast majority of office seekers up til now have been Christian. If that is what a person wants, its not illegal. Plenty of people (quakers, jehovas) do not swear in court either and they are allowed to affirm they are telling the truth (without a bible).

Yes I do, and I have been opposed to rule that makes people of all faiths swear to tell th truth only on a bible in court cases. We are supposed to live in a country with freedom of religion, so we should be able to practice it.
