There are 2 common tests that I know of:
The glowing splint test and the pop test.
The glowing splint test is used to identify the presence of oxygen. You have to light a match and blow it out, you then quickly put the extingished match in to the mouth of the test tube, if it relights there is oxygen gas present.
To do the pop test you put a lit match in the mouth of the test tube containing the gas, if it makes a loud hollow popping sound you know there is hydrogen gas present. It sounds like someone putting a finger in their cheek and pulling it sideways to make a pop sound.
I would recommend only doing these tests once you have predicted the products present since it is not good to have lit matches near tubes of unknown gasses.
