If the GOVT only taxed you if you made over $40,000 a year or have $40,000 in assets? The people in poverty would keep every nickel they made. Saving wouldn't really be a problem for them anymore; they would be able to save all the money or spend it on their homes and rise out of poverty. And after 3 or 4 years, they would have enough in assets or savings to start being taxed by the GOVT again. BUT, now they would be out of "poverty" and could manage the cost of living in america a little easier now. America should help it's own people living here right? Even if you don't have the almighty dollar, you should be able to live your life the way you chose? the number does not have to be exact $40,000. I just mean that not taxing the people that don't make a heck of alot will in a couple years bring their standard of living way up. give the people on the "bottom" a fighting chance to get to a middle class, which is where everyone should be at.

I make less than 40K a year. Whats hurts me is not taxes (I get that back via refund) but fines and fees accumilated thru things like parking tickets, car registration, etc. Parking ticktes and things like that dont matter to people with significant income but a 100 ticket to me hurts. If I don't pay it on time my license gets suspended and the fees triple. Then I have to choose between driving illegaly and risking more fines and possibly inprisonment or missing work cause the bus system here will not get me to my job. I won't even go into student loans and the new interest hike.

***You said: "Even if you don't have the almighty dollar, you should be able to live your life the way you chose?"
***I say: Sure, as long as you can pay for it. There is nothing that requires the Federal Govt to keep you in a lifestyle to which you'd like to become accustomed.

***You said: "The people in poverty would keep every nickel they made. Saving wouldn't really be a problem for them anymore; they would be able to save all the money or spend it on their homes..."
***I say: Do you really think that not paying taxes would cause ANYONE to save more money? No way! it would raise their standard of living, whether in Sec. 8 housing, mobile home, or a mansion. This is faulty logic on your part, sorry.

Plus, once you put a down payment on a h ouse (ASSUMING you could save a nickel or two to rub together) your net worth drastically increases and you are out of the "poverty" you are talking about. You can't buy a house for under $40K anywhere, hardly!

***You say: "give the people on the "bottom" a fighting chance to get to a middle class, which is where everyone should be at."
***I say: That is purely your opinion, not how things should or will be just b/c you think it is somehow "fair." Who are you to tell me or anyone else where I shoudl be? What if I'm satisfied w/ my station in life? What if I like the simple life of making under $40K/year? What if I like the good life of making $400K/year? What business is that of YOURS? None of your business! The govt is not there to make us all equal little drones, all making the same $$. In the US, people are rewarded for hard work! If you want to be told how much $ you can earn and must live on, move to a communist country and delve right in. I'll lay odds you'll be back to the good ol' USA within 6 mos, assuming the Commies will let you out again.

The tax laws already work that way. If you don't make a lot of money, you get back what was taken from your wages. You can also qualify for an earned-income tax credit, which is basically the government giving you money. There is a misconception that poor people should be getting the tax cuts that have been going to the rich. How can you give tax cuts to people who don't pay any taxes?

The governemenet already doesn't tax you if you make below a certain amount. They withhold taxes from your check but you get it all back. Some people get back more than what they paid in. I think 40k is to high. That would exempt most people from paying taxes.

Its not the federal income tax that hurts poor people. Its the draconian fines, and fees that governements charge poor people for being poor.
