Dell comes to mind. Everybrand has good and bad models it mostly melts down to the stats.
I suggest you get an AMD or Intel processor most of the new laptops will have powerful AMD or Intel processors. Of course I would grab dual core processor witch should be no problem almost every knew PC or laptop uses dual cores.
You will want at least 1GB of ram.
You will want at least 80GB of hard drive space probably more around 160GB.
If your main desire is gaming DO NOT get a laptop even the best and most expensive laptops are only half as good as the average desktop at gaming. Many laptops can handle medium end gaming quite well but you will need to look into that before you buy it. If your looking for something to web browse , play light or medium end games well , and look at video or pictures what I listed above will be enough.
Always research a PC before you buy it and get advice from at least 2 people because any 1 person can be wrong.
So ASK twice buy once....
Edited--- I have not used much Laptops but I hear dells are ok. The one you hate will probably be a lot different from a new modern laptop or desktop but If you looking at a desktop dells suck. Go with HP if you can they rock! But I away custom build myself witch if you were into gaming I would for sure go custom but your not. From what you say your looking for almost any average laptop or Desktop thats HP or Dell will be good. I like HP over dell for sure when it comes to desktops I would never touch a Dell desktop. But when it comes to laptops Dell it high up on the charts right now.
Remember AMD or Intel dual core CPU. 1GB or ram or more and at least 80GB hard drive place. Get that and you will be laughing from viewing videos , pictures and web browsing. Note with this setup you can also multitask this is no weak PC. Remember the newer the better.

I am a pro at computers. I think that the computer you need depends on what you will use it for. Also your budget. How much will you spend on it. If you buy don't get the XP media center 2005. Unless you are going to record TV shows on the computer you just overpay for nothing. For 10 bucks you can get vista when it comes out. I like Dell. They have good costumer service and good products. A claptop for games, photos, and videos costs about 700-800 dollars. The new duo core proccesors are good, they give the computer good speed and reactions to your controls(open programs fast) A 80 GB hard drive should be decent enough although you might as well go for the 100 GB and up. ! GB of RAM is a must have. You definetley need a DVD writer. . You need lots of USB ports. All new electronics likes printers, scanners, cameras, and i-pods go through USB ports. Minimum of 4. That should set you on the right track. Just know that PC's with the same charecteristics of a laptop is cheaper and more efficient. if you need more info ask me.

Sony's are way too expensive. The only good thing you get with a sony is a really nice screen. Depends on what your trying to do. I'd say toshiba or a dell.
The Dell XPS's are good I hear. As for me i'm sticking with my Macbook.
Right now the Intel Core 2 duo is the best processor on the market. It's going to cost you extra, but I'd segguest you get about 2Gb Of RAM. Atleast 1GB, otherwise you'll have a helluva time running Vista when it comes out. If your just doing word processing and the like, then just go with a 80GB harddrive.
Read as many reviews as you can and ask yourself what you want to do. You don't need much for just word processing. But Movie/picture editing is going to mean a better video card, lots of RAM and a bigger harddrive.

Dell is probably the easiest place to configure a laptop for your needs within your price range. If you want a great gaming laptop, get the 2nd XPS (as in there are three and this one is in the middle pricewise). For good gaming and amazing computing and entertainment, get the most expensive XPS, and for decent performance all over, get the cheapest XPS. But if gaming, fast computing, and entertainment aren't what you need, get an Inspiron, which can be outfitted for OK entertainment.
