the reason you hear that it retails for 600 and in reality its' more expensive is because there isnt' many of them. supply and demand.

lets pretend that they only made one ps3. and you got it. ok, it's possible that you might play it, but lets look at the ps2 and the technical problems that had in its first wave.

thousands of people are sending you emails, asking if you want to sell it. one guy offers to buy it for a thousand. another guy hears him and says he'll buy it for 1050. some lady decides she'll top this and offer 1200. etc..

that's why the price goes up. that's also why other things are worth so much. gold. diamonds. oil.

i don't think it will ever be much cheaper for 600 dollars, but it won't even settle down to that price until it is readily available to the public. when there are enough that there isn't a craze like this, then it will go to a normal price. but with the expense it costs to make them, they shouldn't drop much lower than the posted 600.

expect that late next year to the middle of 2008.

Don't buy it from a private seller because they are jacking the price to take advantage of people. Come on $1500 for a game console- I can get a great notebook pc for that price. While I'm at it, I'll buy that $300 TMX Elmo that cost the seller $40, and a $500 Nintendo WII, then all my friends and family can call me an idiot for giving away my money. No way, I wait, thank you.
Realistically speaking, wait a while and then buy one at a legitimate store for $400 (20gig) and $600 (60 gig). Besides this will give Sony time to fix the problems that plague first edition systems and allows for more game titles to be released.

PS3? No, only $1500 and up for PS3.

There will be no more PS3s for almost 9 more months. Expect the PS3's to reach about $10k each eventually. If the lawsuit goes forward, then there will be no more PS3's at all, so they will be ultra rare and impossible to get.

Better to get a Wii. You can get that for $500 to $600.
